According to David Thornburg, disruptive technologies evolve and develop over time (Laureate, 2014). It is the instance when technology is on an evolutionary path, and a new efficient and lower cost innovation with similar functionalities may take the place of that older technology (Laureate, 2014).
I happened to be in the store the other day, and while I was at the register I swiped my card which had a chip in it. I was so used to swiping I forgot I had to insert it in the chip-enabled terminal. I believe the chip card is that newer technology that will replace the standard magnetic-stripe-only credit cards.
A chip card is a standard plastic charge card with a microchip, and using this form of payment can make transactions more secure with chip-enabled terminals. The point-of-sale terminal is equipped and programmed to accept chip-card payments. As chip technology is adopted in the U.S., chip-enabled terminals will be available in more merchant locations. Even though this smart chip technology has similar functionalities as the older technology, it has a set of global standards that provides security features not possible with traditional magnetic-stripe cards. According to Discover.com, many countries have already fully adopted this technology, and U.S. merchants and card issuers are now adopting it as well.
As far as for the Sixth Sense device, it can be worn to incorporate the digital and physical world. This device is made up of a pocket projector, small camera, and a microphone. It can be in the form of a pendant and worn on a shirt pocket, and finger caps. This technology can project information digitally onto any projectable surface. This type of technology could ultimately replace the tablets such as iPads. In the educational world, Sixth Sense devices could help students personalize information in order to help differentiate a variety of learning abilities. The possibilities are endless.
