Due to the definition of both of those forces, I believe that the current competition between DVDs and video-on-demand is an example of Red Queens. Dvd’s are definitely still around and used by a particular group of consumers, but it has also lost its competitive edge due to a more advanced technology. Video on demand or VOD is a technology that permits instantaneous viewing of videos at any time. VOD can be viewed on computers, tablets and televisions. I would say that this technology has actually evolved from VHS, to Dvd’s, to Blue rays, to Video on Demand.
I also believe that video-on-demand is located on the reverse section of McLuhan’s tetrad (Thornburg, 2013f). Reverse occurs when a new technology brings back something from the past, such a retrieving or rekindling ideas from old technology. The DVD has been dwindling for quite some time now and online video streaming has rapidly advanced, while VOD technology has conquered the DVD technology. According to mashable.com, video on demand services worth watching includes Netflix, Amazon Video, Hulu, Vudu and ITunes.
